DIU Launches New Technology Portfolio: Advanced Energy & Materials

The Defense Innovation Unit is pleased to announce the launch of a sixth technology portfolio: Advanced Energy & Materials (AE&M). The AE&M Portfolio focuses on leveraging proven advancements in energy and materials technology to enhance capabilities and strengthen resilience across installations and distributed operations. Ben Richardson, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves, will lead the AE&M team as Portfolio Director. Ben comes to the role with past experience in senior Pentagon positions in the offices of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, as well as private sector experience consulting with Protiviti, an internal audit and risk-consulting firm.

Innovation in the advanced energy and materials commercial markets support the Department’s efforts to mitigate risks to continuity of operations, costly logistics requirements associated with fuel transport, and energy constraints to operation mobility. The AE&M Portfolio is working across several lines of effort:

• Advanced Power & Energy Storage: Optimizing energy generation, storage, and delivery to ensure power infrastructure is smart, secure, efficient, and able to endure extreme conditions.

• Next Generation Fuels & Mobility: Enhancing the range, safety, and mission effectiveness of vehicles in contested environments, across domains.

• Materials & Sustainment: Scaling advanced materials and manufacturing to deliver improved capabilities.

DIU has partnered with the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab and FFRDC MIT-Lincoln Lab to provide additional technical capability to the AE&M Portfolio. DoD and USG partners interested in sponsoring prototypes with DIU’s newest portfolio may contact us at a.e.m@diu.mil.

We look forward to announcing AE&M projects and solicitations for company proposals in the coming months. Please monitor our website and social media accounts (links available in the footer of this email) for the latest news and information about all DIU activities and solicitations.
