OBJECTIVE OF THE WORKSHOP:
Over the course of 3 days, this workshop will provide an opportunity for the DoD, Industry, Academia, and SMEs to engage in collaborative-learning efforts. Through this process, AFWERX brings together Air Force leadership, end-users, industry experts, and acquisition professionals led by experts in design thinking and workshop facilitation to deep-dive into the problem set.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

The Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) seeks a state-of-the-art training capability to accelerate the training of a new pilot to accomplish mid-air refueling in the B-52 bomber.

Air-to-air refueling (AAR) is one of the most difficult tasks to accomplish in the B-52 and is the primary driver behind the requirement for many additional training sorties. Increasingly, older bombers and tankers require more maintenance, weather continues to affect our ability to accomplish training, and no current simulation contributes in a meaningful way to a pilot learning the fine motor skills and visual perception of movement necessary to accomplish AAR. Our goal is to develop a trainer that allows pilots to learn this essential skill more quickly.
We need industry experts to help inform our nation’s elite war-fighting capability on the most current technologies. This is not an opportunity to pitch your product, but we encourage you to share your ideas for potential solutions, and we are seeking as many different perspectives as possible. The future of the United States Air Force (USAF) is dependent on investing in solutions that enable the warfighter to meet the threats of the future.

GOALS AND OUTCOMES FROM THIS WORKSHOP:
The results of this workshop will inform the Challenge solicitation to be released March 3, 2021, on www.afwerxchallenge.com, open to all industry, government, academia, and individual contributors. The Air Force will then evaluate solution submissions with the intent of funding all, some, or none of those ideas for further development.

PREREQUISITES:
IMPORTANT: This challenge is open to U.S. companies only, with either U.S. sanctioned and/or sourced manufactured components.
WHY PARTICIPATE?
Be at the forefront of solving operational problems.
Be a leader and change-maker in advancing the USAF
Create meaningful connections with industry experts, DoD program officers, and academia.
