Auditory Neuroscience & Performance

The aim of the Auditory Neuroscience & Performance program is to understand, prevent, and mitigate factors that negatively impact warfighters’ auditory performance. Efforts include understanding biological pathways in response to auditory insult and identifying factors for the prevention or treatment of auditory injuries. Solutions include methods, models, and devices for improving situational awareness and sound localization, quieting systems, augmenting training, and enhancing tactical communications.

Research Concentration Areas:

1. Cochlear hair cell/nerve cell damage and repair

2. Binaural auditory processing and sound localization

3. Technology development to reduce source noise, increase situational awareness, enhance communication, improve personal protective equipment and advance therapeutic approaches for auditory injuries

Research Challenges and Opportunities:

- Basic research to investigate mechanisms of hair/nerve cell deterioration and regeneration

- Basic and applied research to explore novel strategies for hearing restoration

- Applied research to investigate binaural auditory processing and sound localization

- Development of technologies to protect warfighters in high-noise environments

- Development of technologies to enhance sound localization and communication

- Development of technologies to mitigate noise exposure and develop risk assessments

- Development of technologies to further advance therapeutic approaches for hearing injury prevention and/or restoration
