Physiological Analysis Tool Tech Sprint Submission NLT 25 Oct

Physiological Analysis Tool Tech Sprint (TS)

02 – 06 December 2019

Submit NLT 25 October 2019 11:59 PM EST

On 02-06 December, SOFWERX, in concert with United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications and Computers (PEO-C4), will host a Physiological Analysis Tool Tech Sprint (TS) to develop a proof of concept system that can determine physiological responses to messaging. During the week-long event, selected participants from Industry, Academia, and/or National Labs will collaborate to develop a prototype demonstrator that will be assessed and evaluated by End Users to inform future requirements for PEO-C4 MISO.

What is a Tech Sprint?
A Tech Sprint is a 1-2 week event to rapidly integrate and assess technologies of interest.

Technology Focus Areas
The technologies of interest are those that will assist in providing real time monitoring and determination of physiological or overall sentiment response to messaging. This can be derived either from a distance with more than one person (crowd or group), or interpersonal encounters (one-on-one). Both contact and non-contact technologies may be considered. Organizations with solutions in the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Heart Rate Variability
  • Pupillometry
  • Galvanic Skin Response
  • Breathing Analysis
  • Thermal Bio Response
  • Human Movement Analysis
  • Posture Analysis
  • Gaze Patterns/Tracking
  • Micro-Expression Analysis
  • Voice Analysis

Example Use Cases:
1. Key Leader Engagements: When engaging key leaders within an area of responsibility (AOR), passive physiological analysis tools (PATs) can be useful in determining if an organization’s message is being received in a positive or negative way by the indigenous populous and predict trends in acceptance or rejection of specific content or ideas. An example of how such a tool could work is by analyzing a continuous audio and video stream on a cell phone or similar device device, and use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect micro-expressions or biological response, such as, changes in blood flow, body language, voice volume, pitch, inflection and/or changes in tone. Indications and trends could be captured for post engagement analysis and/or provided to the Warfighter in real time through haptic or other alert means.

2. Assessing Message Reception: Use of PATs to determine operational messaging effectiveness while engaging individuals within the AOR is a primary goal. Using an Android tablet or other handheld media device, Warfighters can share content with predetermined individuals. The device could host hardware and/or software that could track eye movement to determine the amount of time spent consuming specific materials, heart rate, facial blood flow, pupil changes and micro-expressions. AI could be used to determine if content reception is positive or negative. Further post-processing could be used to determine demographic trends of content influence.

Timeline:
Phase I – 23 September to 25 October PATs TS Submissions Open: Industry, Academic and Laboratory partners can submit their technology and/or capabilities for review. Submission instructions and templates are provided at the bottom of the webpage. Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated for their potential to satisfy the Warfighters’ needs based on the use cases provided. Favorably evaluated submissions will receive an invitation on or about 01 November 2019.

Phase II – 01 November to 01 December Matchmaking: Organizations may be paired to begin pre-event collaboration and development, as required based on level of integration/interoperability with other systems.

Phase III – 02-06 December PATs Tech Sprint: During the event, attendees will collaborate to develop a holistic proof of concept physiological system by leveraging and integrating their existing technologies. Selected participants will be afforded a stipend for their participation on 02-06 December 2019.

Phase IV – Path Forward: The outcome from the Tech Sprint will be a prototype demonstrator that will be assessed and evaluated by End Users to inform future requirements for PEO-C4 MISO.
