The Topic of Discussion: This week, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) Team will discuss the Rapid Assessment of Threat Exposure (RATE) human performance wearables program.
With early detection, DIU hopes it can help stop the spread of infection within the military. Called Rapid Analysis of Threat Exposure (RATE), the project is developed with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and Philips North America.
The RATE program leverages a previous prototyping effort developed in collaboration with DIU, DTRA, and Philips Healthcare, which originated by training an algorithm on a data set of approximately 300,000 hospital-acquired infections, including sepsis, pneumonia, and SARS.

BIO: Chief Medical Officer, Niels Olson
The Defense Innovation Unit is proud to share that Chief Medical Officer, Niels Olson, has been named the Navy Times “Sailor of the Year 2021” due to his work on the Navy’s response to last year’s COVID-19 outbreak aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Niels Olson is a board-certified pathologist and the Chief Medical Officer at the Defense Innovation Unit in Mountain View, California. In this role, he oversees research programs in machine learning for a broad spectrum of anatomic pathology applications, augmented reality microscopy, artificial intelligence applications in radiology, and distributed sensors in austere environments.
Before joining DIU, Niels served as Laboratory Medical Director at Naval Hospital Guam, staff pathologist at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, and General Medical Officer for Surface Forces Pacific. He completed AP/CP residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Niels earned an undergraduate degree in physics and served seven years as a Surface Warfare Operator in the Navy before attending medical school.
BIO: COL Beth Sweet
Elizabeth Sweet serves as the Defense Engagement Lead for the Pentagon’s commercial technology hub, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). An active U.S. Army Reserve Colonel, she has served in several military operations, including Joint Operation Safe Haven Panama, Joint Guardian, Kosovo, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In her civilian career, she served as a crime intelligence analyst in South Florida and as an R&D Manager in the Department of Defense as a civilian, providing subject matter expertise in applying science and technology to operations for geographic information, geospatial and imagery science.
Colonel Sweet most recently served in the Chief Innovation Office in the newly formed 75th Innovation Command, as the Operations & Processes Portfolio Lead, liaison to the Defense Advanced Research Program Agency (DARPA), and as the Army affiliate of the Undersecretary of Defense Research and Engineering (USD R&E) Joint Reserve Directorate. She holds a Bachelor of Russian Language from Florida State University and a Master’s of Science in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University, focusing on innovation, creativity, and technology diffusion in the Intelligence Community.

Niels’s expertise has been essential to the facilitation of Predictive Health and Rapid Analysis of Threat Exposure (RATE) prototype projects at DIU: Predictive Health Standard diagnostic procedures require healthcare practitioners to manually review large volumes of data to provide quality patient care.
The U.S. military is using smartwatches and rings to predict illness
The big project here, then, is the set of algorithms being used to detect illness. The system is known as Rapid Analysis of Threat Exposure (RATE) and is trained on a dataset of more than a quarter-million patient records. If the tests go well, RATE could change how we think about preventative medicine for everyone.

Format: To get us started, DEFTECH will briefly offer a relevant Technology Leadership topic and open it up for discussion, but the participants will drive the conversations. After the open forum, DEFTECH will briefly review current opportunities, trends, and upcoming events.
